Its panels explain how the island was formed and which geological stages it has passed through, with a section on how the local population has managed its geological resources. It is run by the island company Meridiano and has a shop and toilet. Bus line 2, which links El Pinar with San Andrés and Valverde, stops within reach.

Monumento al antiguo meridiano 0º

A monument at the western tip of El Hierro, on Punta de Orchilla, beside the lighthouse that for centuries marked the prime meridian. El Hierro is known as the Island of the Meridian thanks to Ptolemy, the Greco-Egyptian astronomer who placed the origin of longitudes here in the 2nd century, where it stayed until it moved to Greenwich in 1884. The spot is reached by car and sits well off the usual routes.
