Volcán Hoya de Fileba
The Hoya de Fileba volcano rises in the municipality of Valverde, on the ridge that separates the summit of El Hierro from the El Golfo escarpment. Its crater, at around 1,330 metres above sea level, measures some 450 metres across and about 160 metres deep, and is regarded as one of the best preserved on the island. A viewpoint of its own looks into the caldera.
The shape of the cone and its crater is clearly readable from the rim, which is why Hoya de Fileba is among the most frequently cited volcanoes on El Hierro. The setting belongs to the island's summit belt, with reforested pine areas crossed on the approach and the El Golfo escarpment opening out to the north.
The usual approach starts from Valverde along the HI-1 road, the route linking the capital with the south-west of the island, and continues on foot from the parking point. The walk around the crater rim is short and completed in a single loop. The site lies close to the Llanía area, one of the most frequented summit routes on El Hierro.
