El Caletón (Garachico)
Natural pools born from the 1706 lava flow, beside the San Miguel castle in Garachico.

El Caletón is a cluster of volcanic natural pools at the foot of Garachico's old town, with the castle of San Miguel as a backdrop. Today they are one of the most beloved bathing spots in Tenerife, with nooks of clear water among the black rock. Conditions depend on the swell, so it is worth checking the sea before going in.
Did you know they were born of a disaster? In 1706 the eruption of the Trevejo volcano poured its lava into the sea for forty days, buried the harbour that had made Garachico one of the great centres of the wine trade, and as the lava cooled on meeting the water it left these pools of whimsical shapes.
