Canary Islands volcanoes: which ones sleep, which don't

The Canaries do not have volcanoes. The Canaries are volcanoes. Every beach, every ravine and every winding road sits on top of something that came up from the floor of the Atlantic and stayed.

That is why, every time the ground shifts a little under Teide, headlines turn up with exclamation marks. And almost none of them explain the one thing that actually matters: the eight islands are not the same. Some are still growing. Others have been asleep for longer than our species has existed.

Here is what the official data says, island by island.

What it really means for a volcano to be "active"

This is where nearly all of the confusion begins. The official glossary of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN, Spain's National Geographic Institute) puts it like this: a volcano is considered active if it is erupting, if it shows signs of activity such as earthquakes or gas emissions, or if it has erupted during the Holocene, that is, in the last 10,000 years.

Ten thousand years. That is the window.

So when a headline says "Teide is an active volcano", it is not announcing anything. It is repeating a geological classification. It is as true as saying the Mediterranean is a sea. The useful question is not whether a volcano is active, but when it last erupted and what the instruments are measuring right now.

Island by island: the last time each one erupted

  • La Palma: 2021, Tajogaite. Active.

  • El Hierro: 2011-12, submarine (Tagoro). Active.

  • Tenerife: 1909, Chinyero. Active.

  • Lanzarote: 1824. Active.

  • Gran Canaria: around 2,000 years ago. No eruptions in historical times.

  • Fuerteventura: not securely dated, tens of thousands of years. No eruptions in historical times.

  • La Gomera: around 1.9 million years ago. Quiet.

  • La Graciosa: part of the Lanzarote system. No eruptions of its own.

The four islands that have erupted since the Europeans arrived

They are Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. No others.

La Palma is by some distance the most active island in the archipelago: Tacande, Tehuya, Martín, San Antonio, El Charco, San Juan, Teneguía and, most recently, Tajogaite in 2021. That entire list fits on the Cumbre Vieja ridge, which in geological terms is a newborn of about 125,000 years.

El Hierro is the youngest island of them all, barely more than a million years old. Its 2011-2012 eruption was submarine, off La Restinga, and it left behind a new volcano on the seabed, christened Tagoro. On land there are no documented eruptions in historical times.

Tenerife has 42 eruptions in the Holocene, more than any other island. The last one was Chinyero in 1909, and it lasted ten days. The summit crater of Teide, by contrast, has not produced lava for around 1,150 years.

Lanzarote holds the record, and also the most repeated mistake. Its last eruption was in 1824, not 1730. What happened between 1730 and 1736 was Timanfaya: six straight years of eruption, more than thirty craters along a fourteen kilometre fissure, and a quarter of the island buried. It was the largest historical eruption in the Canaries, but it was not the last.

Did you know? There is still heat under Timanfaya left over from that eighteenth century eruption. At the Islote de Hilario the rock passes 100 °C at the surface itself, and thirteen metres down a borehole with fixed thermometers records 610 °C, the highest temperature measured anywhere in the park. Three hundred years on, the ground is still burning.

The islands that have been quiet for centuries or millennia

Gran Canaria has recorded no eruption since the Europeans arrived. The most recent confirmed one is placed at around the year 40 AD, in the area of the Bandama crater. Geologically it is still in a rejuvenation phase, but on a human scale it has been still for twenty centuries.

Fuerteventura is the oldest island: its emerged rocks are a little over twenty million years old. Its last eruption is not securely dated and the sources do not agree, but we are talking about tens of thousands of years at the very least. There are no historical eruptions.

La Gomera is the extreme case, and in the best possible sense. It is the only island in the archipelago that has not been active in the last million years. Its last known eruption was roughly 1.9 million years ago. It is in an erosive phase: it no longer grows, it gets carved. With no new lava to fill anything in, erosion has had millions of years to dig out its ravines, and that impossible relief is exactly what explains the Silbo Gomero: speaking from one hillside to the next meant hours of walking, so the people who lived there learned to whistle to each other instead.

La Graciosa and the rest of the Chinijo Archipelago do not work as a system of their own, but as an extension of the Lanzarote one.

And here is the fact that puts all of the above in order: the islands get younger towards the west. Fuerteventura is 20 million years old; El Hierro is barely more than one. The archipelago was built from east to west, and the western islands are the ones still under construction.

What is happening right now beneath Teide

In July 2026 thousands of microearthquakes were recorded under Las Cañadas. Nobody felt them. Not one passed magnitude 2, and they were located between ten and fifteen kilometres below sea level.

What matters is not the episode but the pattern. According to the IGN itself, it was the tenth episode of this kind recorded on Tenerife since February. Always in the same place, the western part of Las Cañadas, at the same depth, with the same tiny magnitude. And the IGN closes every statement with the same line: this activity "does not increase the risk of an eruption in the short or medium term".

Ten times in six months. That is no longer a scare: it is a routine.

The PEVOLCA Scientific Committee confirmed as much in its report of March 2026: no changes have been recorded in ground deformation, the geochemical surveys show a decline, and these events "still do not imply an increased probability of a volcanic eruption in the short or the medium term". The same report adds the context that almost nobody mentions: signals of this kind have been detected since 2016.

This is not news. It is a volcano breathing, and it has been doing it with witnesses for ten years.

Who keeps watch, and how you would hear about it

On Tenerife alone there are more than a hundred stations, instruments and sampling points measuring seismicity, ground deformation and gas composition. There is an automatic protocol: if more than ten seismic events occur within an hour, the IGN alerts Protección Civil (Civil Protection).

The volcanic traffic light

The Canaries work with four colours: green (normality), yellow (alert, and this is the point at which the emergency plan is activated), orange (precautionary evacuation) and red (declared emergency).

There is one nuance that hardly anyone mentions and that is worth knowing: the plan states that if an eruption poses no risk to people, the traffic light can stay at orange or even at yellow. The colour does not measure the spectacle, it measures the risk. There can be visible lava without the light ever turning red.

The two phone numbers

This is probably the most practical piece of information in the whole article, and it comes word for word from the official leaflets:

  • 112: for genuine emergencies only.

  • 012: for information.

Calling 112 to ask questions, the authorities say, "will only contribute to its saturation and lack of efficiency". If one day you want to know what is going on, the number is 012.

And now the lovely part

All of the above has one rather pleasant consequence: the landscape you come here to see is exactly the same phenomenon the headlines are talking about.

The natural pools you swim in are lava flows that reached the sea and cooled. The black sand on many beaches is volcanic rock ground down by the Atlantic. The clear sky that makes the Canaries one of the best places in the world for looking at stars exists because there is a mountain of almost four thousand metres standing above the clouds.

The Parque Nacional del Teide, the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya and the Cueva del Viento are not places in spite of the volcanoes. They are places thanks to them.

If you are going up Teide this summer, two things have changed recently and are worth knowing. Since 19 June 2026 smoking has been banned in every open space of the National Park: paths, tracks, viewpoints, car parks, rest areas and public facilities. It is a permanent measure, not just for the fire risk season, and the Cabildo introduced it after several fires started by cigarette ends. And the historic Refugio de Altavista, closed since 2019 for a full refurbishment, reopened on 20 July 2026: 49 places, one night per visit, and booking required in advance.

Living on a living archipelago does not mean living in danger. It means living somewhere where the ground still has plans, and where more than a hundred instruments are listening to it day and night in case it ever decides to talk about them.
