Rosemary Shirley. The imagined villageverified
Rosemary Shirley of the University of Leicester explores how artists and photographers have imagined village life from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The lecture is given in English with simultaneous Spanish interpretation, is the first of two that Thursday and is part of the series of the Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote 2026, at the Antiguo Parador in Arrecife, with free admission.
Rosemary Shirley, of the University of Leicester, offers a journey through depictions of rural life in art and photography since the late nineteenth century. Villages have appeared as idyllic refuges and symbols of authenticity and tradition, but also as places of change, tension and decline; drawing on a wide selection of works, the session asks how the view of the countryside has changed and what has been left out of the picture.
It belongs to the “Pueblos” lecture series that leads up to the Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote 2026, organised by the Asociación Tenique Cultural at the Antiguo Parador, the UNED centre in Arrecife. Admission is free. The lecture is in English with simultaneous Spanish interpretation, is the first of two on Thursday 5 November 2026 and starts at 18:00.
