On 13 November 2009 the Sahrawi activist Aminetu Haidar was expelled from Western Sahara by the Moroccan authorities and taken to Lanzarote, after she had given her nationality as Sahrawi at passport control on her return from an international trip. The episode led to a 32-day hunger strike at César Manrique-Lanzarote airport and to a diplomatic crisis between Spain and Morocco. Her peaceful resistance drew support from figures in culture and civil society, and in 2019 it was recognised with the Right Livelihood Award, known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. The documentary Aminetu traces the life of a woman devoted to defending the rights of the Sahrawi people.
