Where to work out outdoors in Tenerife: seven calisthenics parks and a stadium
Missing your workouts on holiday, but not keen on buying a gym pass for just one week? In Tenerife you do not need one. The island has plenty of free public calisthenics parks, with pull-up bars, parallel bars and wall bars waiting for you, often right by the sea. A morning session on the promenade, then a quick dip: it is hard to think of a better holiday routine.
We have picked eight places, from the capital to the north coast and the resort towns of the south. For each one we tell you what you will find there and why it is worth heading to that one in particular.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
1. La Granja calisthenics park
One of the best-known outdoor training spots in the capital, inside Parque La Granja, the city's big park. According to the city's open data, it covers about 175 m² and has eight elements: pull-up bars at several heights, several types of parallel bars, a wide freestyle bar, a vertical pole, monkey bars and wall bars. Since 2026 a new roof has given it shade, which on this island is no small thing. People who train here also mention the park's drinking fountain and toilets nearby.
2. Plaza de España calisthenics area
Right in the city centre, facing the sea, Plaza de España has a public workout area too. According to the open data, it covers about 153 m² with eight elements on a rubber floor. Early morning or sunset is best, and you can combine it with a run along the seafront promenade. It is out in the open, so keep that in mind around midday.
The north coast
3. Playa Martiánez calisthenics park, Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz council built it in 2023 on the Playa Martiánez promenade, at the end of Avenida Cristóbal Colón. It has bars, a bench and wall bars. The best thing about it is the location: you train with a view of the Atlantic on one of the town's busiest promenades, and the beach is right there when you finish. If you want to explore the town as well, this article covers what is worth seeing.
4. Parque Juan Marrero street workout park, Los Realejos
If you train seriously, do not miss this one. The street workout park in the La Montaña neighbourhood is one of the best-equipped training spots in Tenerife: more than 250 m² of rubber flooring, 17 pull-up bars, parallel bars of various heights and widths, monkey bars, wall bars, a climbing rail and a vertical pole. According to Los Realejos council, it has been certified for competitions by the World Street Workout & Calisthenics Federation, and one section can be used from a wheelchair. One condition: the equipment is for people over 14 and at least 140 cm tall.
5. Iván Ramallo athletics stadium, Los Realejos
It is a stadium rather than a park, but if you want to run on a proper track, this is your place. The track at the municipal stadium of Los Realejos is certified by the Spanish Athletics Federation, and there is also a natural grass pitch. According to the council, the track is open to the general public too, Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00. People who use it mention changing rooms and showers. Access may be limited during club training sessions or competitions, so it is worth asking beforehand.
The east coast
6. La Hornilla outdoor gym and calisthenics park, Candelaria
It sits on Candelaria's seafront promenade, right by the water. According to the council, it combines eight calisthenics elements with five fitness machines, so it works for strength training and for gentler exercise alike, even for a mixed group. People who use it praise the shade sail, the soft flooring and the sea view, and there are public toilets nearby.
The south
7. El Almendro calisthenics park, Valle San Lorenzo (Arona)
If you want to get away from the bustle of the southern resorts, this park is waiting higher up in Valle San Lorenzo, in the El Almendro recreation area. Arona council opened it in February 2019. It has a pull-up bar, a freestyle bar, snake-shaped monkey bars, wall bars, high and low parallel bars, vertical posts and a bar for practising the "human flag". Because it is in a protected area, the ground is sand rather than artificial turf.
8. Alcalá calisthenics park, Guía de Isora
One of the most beautiful training spots on the west coast, on the La Jaquita seafront promenade. Guía de Isora council opened it in 2020, and it is accessible for people with reduced mobility. It has three pull-up bars, monkey bars, wall bars, three high and two low parallel bars, plus two parallel bars that can be used from a wheelchair. The best time to come is sunset: here the sun drops into the sea while you do your last set. Afterwards it is a short walk, about 350 metres, to the Alcalá natural pools: a dip in the ocean after your workout.
When and how to train
Avoid the middle of the day. Most of the parks are out in the open, and metal bars heat up fast in the sun. Early morning or late afternoon is far more pleasant.
Bring water. Not every park has a drinking fountain.
Training gloves or chalk come in handy. In the seafront parks, salty air and sweat can make the bar slippery.
Keep an eye on the calima. If hot, dusty air blows in from Africa, make it a rest day. In this article we explain what to expect when it does.
Share the space. These are public places, used by children and locals too. If someone is waiting for a piece of equipment, just take turns.
Would you rather run or hike?
The seafront promenades in Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, Candelaria and Alcalá are great for running too. If you would rather head into the mountains, we cover the waymarked trails in this overview. And if you are getting around without a car, this article has everything you need to know about the local buses (guaguas).
Note: this information is for guidance only. The condition of the equipment, opening hours and access can change, so if there is something you specifically need, check with the local council.
