Enigma Variations

Concerts

Concert A16 of the Sinfónica de Tenerife in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero. The programme brings together Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, Philip Glass's Concerto for Saxophone Quartet played by Kebyart Ensemble, and the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, a work about creation, identity and memory.

This concert speaks of creation, identity and memory. The evening opens with Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, one of the most moving pages of the twentieth century. Kebyart Ensemble then plays Philip Glass's Concerto for Saxophone Quartet, a work the Sinfónica performs for the first time, in which the repetitive pulse and the bright timbre of the saxophone build a hypnotic listening experience.

The programme ends with Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. Each variation portrays someone close to the composer while keeping a mystery intact, and within the season Libertad o destino the work carries freedom into the territory of identity and affection. Giancarlo Guerrero returns to the podium. A pre-concert talk is given at 18:30 in the Sala Avenida by Leandro Martín. Access is allowed only to those over five years of age.
