Shostakovich's Fifth

Concerts

Concert A17 of the Sinfónica de Tenerife in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, conducted by Delyana Lazarova, artistic collaborator of the orchestra. The programme brings together Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the soloist Seong-Jin Cho, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, described on the programme as a fundamental work of the twentieth century.

In few works is the tension between freedom and destiny as complex as in Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. Premiered in a context of political surveillance and real threat, the score has been heard for decades as a public answer, a veiled confession or a form of resistance, and its apparently triumphant ending still raises an uncomfortable question about what exactly is being celebrated.

The first half features Seong-Jin Cho in Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2, a dazzling score of enormous technical demand in which the piano becomes an almost orchestral force. Delyana Lazarova, artistic collaborator of the Sinfónica de Tenerife, conducts. A pre-concert talk is given at 18:30 in the Sala Avenida by Tania Marrero. Access to the hall is allowed only to those over five years of age.
