Owen Wingraveverified
Ópera de Tenerife brings Benjamin Britten's two-act opera Owen Wingrave to the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, in what are the work's first performances in Spain. It follows a young man who rejects his family's military inheritance and is pushed outside a system that refuses to listen to him. The opera is sung in English with Spanish and English surtitles, with the Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo.
Ópera de Tenerife presents Owen Wingrave, by Benjamin Britten, a two-act opera about a young man who says no to war inside a family that has spent generations saying yes without questioning it. His decision to break the chain of violence pushes him to the margins and turns him into a problem, almost a traitor: nobody wants to hear his ethics, they only want him to obey. The walls of the house, heavy with portraits and military glory, echo a system that refuses to change, and against the noise of tradition his conscience is left alone. These performances are the work's Spanish premiere, sung in English with Spanish and English surtitles.
David Greilsammer conducts and Emiliano Suárez directs, with the Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo. Nikolay Borchev sings Owen Wingrave and Ian Bostridge General Sir Philip Wingrave, in an Auditorio de Tenerife production with sets by Carles Berga, costumes by Carola Baleztena and lighting by Albert Faura. There are two performances and this is the second: Saturday 17 April 2027 at 19:00 in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tickets are sold through the venue's website; once the hall doors have closed no admission is allowed, and only those over five may enter.
