Mongaverified
Monga is a performance by Brazilian actress and director Jéssica Teixeira in La Salita at the Auditorio de Tenerife. It starts from the question «Can you imagine yourself at 100?» and joins the story of Julia Pastrana, a 19th-century Mexican performer with hypertrichosis who was exhibited in circuses and freak shows. In Brazilian Portuguese with Spanish surtitles and sign language; recommended for over-16s.
Monga (2024) follows E.L.A (2019), the first piece by Brazilian actress and director Jéssica Teixeira, who makes her own unusual body the main source of her stage research. Starting from the question «Can you imagine yourself at 100?», and using theatre techniques and psychoanalytic tools, she joins the story of Julia Pastrana, a 19th-century Mexican woman with congenital hypertrichosis who was exhibited as the «ape woman» and became an inspiration for freak shows. The piece revisits that cruelty without sensationalism and turns the gaze back on the audience, between psychological horror, nervous laughter and shame.
It is performed in La Salita at the Auditorio de Tenerife, in Brazilian Portuguese with Spanish surtitles and Spanish sign language interpretation. It is recommended for over-16s and includes strobe effects, loud sounds, nudity and stage smoke; there is no post-show talk, but the actress greets the audience on the way out. Tickets will go on sale soon on the Auditorio website, and latecomers are not admitted once the doors close. This performance is on Sunday 22 November 2026 at 18:00.
