Millares. Centenario: staged reading, conversation and Alberto Portera's film at Teatro Guiniguada
For the centenary of Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1926 to Madrid, 1972), Teatro Guiniguada devotes an evening to his most experimental side: a staged reading of his Dramas para leer, a conversation with his daughter Coro Millares, and the 1966 film in which Millares shrouds his own body, evoking the Canarian mummies. Wednesday 28 October, 19:00 to 21:00, free with booking.
To mark the centenary of the birth of Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1926 to Madrid, 1972), one of the great names of Canarian art and of twentieth-century Spanish art, Teatro Guiniguada offers an evening devoted to his most experimental work. First the actress Aranza Coello reads a selection of his Dramas para leer; she then talks about these texts and the experimental side of his work with art historian and curator Alicia Chillida and with Coro Millares, the artist's daughter and the manager of his legacy. The session closes with a process film shot by Alberto Portera in 1966, in which Millares shrouds himself and covers himself in paint, turning his own body into an evocation of the Canarian mummies, a central motif of his painting.
Programme for Wednesday 28 October 2026: 19:00 to 19:30, staged reading; 19:30 to 20:15, round table «Otras derivas artísticas de Millares»; 20:30 to 21:00, «Millares por Alberto Portera», original super-8 footage transferred to digital, from the Alberto Portera and Catherine Cailliau Archive (Fundación Juan March). Entry is free, but you need to book a seat on the Teatro Guiniguada ticket website; the theatre is in Vegueta.
