Song of Destiny

Concerts

Concert A14 of the Sinfónica de Tenerife in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, conducted by Pablo González with the Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid. The programme brings together Beethoven's Egmont overture and Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Brahms's Song of Destiny on a poem by Hölderlin, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique.

This concert condenses the motto of the season, Libertad o destino. Beethoven opens the programme with Egmont, music of resistance against oppression, and continues with Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, which turns the motionless silence of the sea into movement, breath and arrival. In Song of Destiny, on a poem by Hölderlin, Brahms sets the serenity of the gods against the human condition, exposed to pain and to time, with the Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid.

The second half is devoted to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique, a confessional score in which destiny becomes breath, body and farewell. Pablo González conducts. A pre-concert talk is given at 18:30 in the Sala Avenida by José Lorenzo Chinea of the Asociación Tinerfeña de Amigos de la Música. Access to the hall is allowed only to those over five years of age.
