Hamletverified

Ópera de Tenerife presents Hamlet, by Ambroise Thomas, in a French production that gives life to the Shakespearean tragedy as an opera in five acts. Hamlet and Ophélie live in a court where the corruption is plain to see but dresses itself up as protocol and good manners: everyone knows something and everyone keeps something quiet. He suffocates between the duty to avenge and the horror of doing it; she is lost in the impossibility of being heard. Silence here is not an absence of words but an excess of lies, half-truths and manipulation, much like our own time, where an overload of information sits alongside a lack of trust and of real listening. Among ghosts, intrigues and inner monologues, the world seems vast and mute. The opera is sung in French with Spanish and English surtitles.

Seok-Won Hong conducts and Nicola Berloffa directs, with the Sinfónica de Tenerife, the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo and the Centro Internacional de Danza Tenerife. Fernando Campero sings Hamlet and Serena Sáenz Ophélie, alongside Lucie Peyramaure as Queen Gertrude and Nicolas Courjal as Claudius, in an Opéra de Saint-Etienne production with sets by Aurelio Colombo, lighting by Valerio Tiberi and video design by Dino Sabanovic. There are four performances and this is the second: Tuesday 9 March 2027 at 19:00 in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tickets are sold through the venue's website; once the hall doors have closed no admission is allowed, and only those over five may enter.
