The San Florencio storm: a dramatised walking tour of La Lagunaverified

Culture · Gratis

A free dramatised walking tour of La Laguna recalling the San Florencio storm of 1826, with actors from Burka Teatro and the historian Néstor Verona. It leaves from the Plaza del Convento de Las Claras and ends at the Real Santuario del Cristo, in front of the vera efigie of the Virgin of Candelaria. Tours run until 25 October at 11:00 and, on some days, also at 17:00.

La Laguna council's Heritage department, together with Burka Teatro and the historian and popular writer Néstor Verona, offers a dramatised walking tour for the bicentenary of the San Florencio storm, which struck Tenerife in November 1826 and which many researchers consider the worst documented natural disaster in the Canary Islands. Through staged scenes, the audience relives the floods, the loss of life, the disappearance of the original image of the Virgin of Candelaria and the changes that followed, such as the arrival of cochineal. Along the way, real people of the period come to life, including the naturalist Sabino Berthelot, Dolores de Betancourt y Castro, the magistrate José María de Valdivia and the canon José Quintero Estévez.

The tour starts at the Plaza del Convento de Las Claras. It passes through the Viana 51 space and the cloister of the convent of San Juan Bautista, of the Poor Clares, and ends at the Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna, where Néstor Verona explains the vera efigie of the Virgin of Candelaria, one of the most faithful records of the statue lost in 1826. Participation is free and open to all. Remaining tours: Tuesday 20 October at 11:00; Wednesday 21, Friday 23 and Saturday 24 at 11:00 and 17:00; Sunday 25 at 11:00. There is no tour on Thursday 22. The source does not give the length of the tour.
