The Pride of Loving Youverified
Ópera de Tenerife brings El orgullo de quererte, a newly created zarzuela by Javier Carmena, to the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife. Its characters dare to love in a setting that does not always grant that love legitimacy. It is sung in Spanish with Spanish and English surtitles, with the Sinfónica de Tenerife, conducted by Alondra de la Parra. This is the third and last performance, on Sunday 27 June 2027 at 18:00.
Ópera de Tenerife presents El orgullo de quererte, a newly created zarzuela by Javier Carmena. Its characters dare to love in a setting that does not always grant that love legitimacy, and that intimate gesture turns into a quiet political act. While families, institutions and the gaze of others try to dictate which affections deserve to be named and which must be hidden, they build a small emotional homeland in the Chueca neighbourhood, where pride is the answer to fear and guilt. The work speaks to the present by showing how, amid a climate of hatred and of rights being rolled back, to go on loving and to say so out loud is a form of resistance. It is sung in Spanish with Spanish and English surtitles.
Alondra de la Parra conducts, with Albert Boadella and Martina Cabanas directing, and with the Sinfónica de Tenerife, the Coro Titular Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo and the Centro Internacional de Danza Tenerife. The cast includes Enrique Viana as P. J., Leonardo Sánchez as Tadeo, Germán Olvera as Alonso, María Rey-Joly as Mari Cruz and Berna Perles as La Petri, in a coproduction of the Fundación Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid-ORCAM and the Auditorio de Tenerife. There are three performances and this is the last: Sunday 27 June 2027 at 18:00 in the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tickets are sold through the venue's website; once the hall doors have closed no admission is allowed, and only those over five may enter.
