5 Centímetros por segundo (Byôsoku go Senchimêtoru), written and directed by Makoto Shinkai (Japan, 2007), is part of Filmoteca Canaria’s Japón se anima cycle. The lives of Akari Shinohara and Takaki Tono separate on the day they finish primary school: Akari’s parents move to another city and the two stay in touch by letter. A year later Takaki travels by train through bad weather to see her again, but time pulls them further apart until the letters stop arriving.
There are no parallel worlds or supernatural events here: a train station, a journey, a letter or a wait are enough to speak of distance. Five centimetres per second is roughly the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall. The film runs 63 minutes and is screened in the original language with Spanish subtitles at Espacio La Granja. Admission is free with an invitation collected in advance online or at the box office. The screening is on Thursday 19 November 2026 at 19:00.
