Yolanda Ruano: Three faces of the same rebellion (Una habitación propia series)verified

Culture · Gratis

The teacher and researcher Yolanda Ruano looks at the patriarchal world of the nineteenth century and the social confinement of three great female characters of world literature: Ana Ozores, Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina, the protagonists of La Regenta, Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina. Desire, the body, transgression, education, religion and punishment run through the talk. Part of the third Una habitación propia series, at El Almacén in Arrecife, with free entry.

The teacher and researcher Yolanda Ruano addresses the patriarchal context of the nineteenth century and the social confinement endured by three great female characters of world literature: Ana Ozores, Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina, the protagonists of La Regenta by Leopoldo Alas Clarín, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. That these three women broke with the canons society imposed on them from birth brought a series of tragic consequences upon them.

After a summarised reading of the three novels, the talk asks whether the authors meant to convey a particular message, what a twenty first century reader takes from them today and why reading them from a gender perspective still matters, taking in desire, the body, transgression, the forbidden, sin, education, religion, the construction of subjectivity, punishment and death as a symbolic closure. The lecture belongs to the third series Una habitación propia. Visión y huella de relatos femeninos no contados, coordinated by Elena Ramírez at El Almacén in Arrecife, and takes place on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at 19:30, with free entry.
