It is a seafaring romance in three acts, with a libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw and music by Pablo Sorozábal, premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela on 23 March 1940. The action takes place in an imaginary village on the Cantabrian coast, around Marola, who runs a tavern.
The XXXIV Temporada de Zarzuela de Canarias brings 'La tabernera del puerto' to the Teatro Pérez Galdós for two performances, the first on 18 September and this second one on the 19th. The story unfolds in an imaginary village on the Cantabrian coast and revolves around Marola, a strong and independent woman who runs a tavern. The cast includes Ruth Terán as Marola, Andeka Gorrotxategi as Leandro, Emmanuel Franco as Juan de Eguía and Jeroboam Tejera as Simpson. One of its best known numbers is the romanza 'No puede ser'. Doors open 45 minutes before the start.
