The organisers call it the most powerful wave in Europe: a heavy barrel breaking over a shallow reef at the foot of the cliff, and this is where the world titles are decided. The contest has been held since 2013.
The dates are a waiting period: the organisers pick the six best days depending on the sea, because the wave needs high tide, a long north-west swell and an offshore wind all at once. Contest days, heat order and results are announced in the official app; check it before you go, as mobile coverage at El Frontón is patchy. Spectators watch from the top of the cliff. A podium tradition: the winner has to lift a whole bunch of bananas, 50 to 70 kilos, while the crowd counts to ten.
