On Sunday 4 October, the neighbours of El Gusano, in El Pinar on El Hierro, celebrate San Esteban in the saint's little square. From 11:30 there is an exhibition of old photographs and a dessert contest, at 12:00 the statue of San Esteban is carried down to the parish church of San Antonio Abad, and in the afternoon there is a parranda, prizes and a dance until 19:00.
The San Esteban festival brings the neighbours of El Gusano, in El Pinar on El Hierro, together in the Placeta de San Esteban on Sunday 4 October. It is organised by the residents themselves, with the support of El Pinar town council, and it is very much a family affair: anyone who wants to can bring a dessert for the contest or something for the toast.
At 11:30 the exhibition of old photographs opens and the dessert contest begins, with the entries handed in and judged by a jury. At 12:00 San Esteban is carried down to the parish church of San Antonio Abad, and after mass there is a procession and a toast. At 15:00 the parranda Taicares plays, at 16:00 the prizes are awarded and the desserts tasted, and at 17:00 the dance with Grupo Valentías begins. The festival ends at 19:00.
