Daniasa M. Curbelo: Se quedó p'a vestir santos (Una habitación propia series)verified

Culture · Gratis

The artist and researcher Daniasa M. Curbelo asks what role women and sexual dissidences have played, and still play, in the religious life of the Canary Islands, with rural areas and peripheries at the centre of her account. The talk is followed by a screening of her own short film Los Llanos: el barrio que no pudieron borrar. Part of the third Una habitación propia lecture series, at El Almacén in Arrecife, with free entry.

The artist and researcher Daniasa M. Curbelo gives a lecture accompanied by a short film of her own. Under the title Se quedó p'a vestir santos: presencia y relevancia de mujeres y disidencias sexuales en contextos religiosos de Canarias, and from a viewpoint that places rural areas and peripheries at the centre, the talk reviews the presence and participation of these groups in the Catholic traditions and festivities of the Canary Islands, questions the stereotypes attached to them and considers how religious spaces could also become places of resistance, community and liberation.

The screening that follows, Los Llanos: el barrio que no pudieron borrar, deals with the relocation of hundreds of families from the fishing quarter of Los Llanos in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and with the community that went on caring for the chapel and the devotion to the Virgen de Regla. The lecture belongs to the third series Una habitación propia. Visión y huella de relatos femeninos no contados, coordinated by Elena Ramírez at El Almacén, and takes place in Arrecife on Tuesday 6 October 2026 at 19:30, with free entry.
