This is a narrow but powerful channel of water that flows from the shore out to sea. It can sweep away even the most experienced swimmers in a matter of seconds. Knowing how to recognise the&nbsp;<strong>and knowing about the rip currents in the Canary Islands<\/strong>&nbsp;can save lives. It is vital to know that the undertow does not sink you, but rather pulls you away from the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to recognize a rip current?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although sometimes difficult to detect, there are telltale signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An area of water with a calmer or flatter appearance at the wave line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A water channel with a different, often more turbid colour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A line of foam, seaweed or debris moving offshore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A choppy or rippled water surface between waves breaking on the shore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to do if you get caught in a hangover current?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing is to stay calm. Panic is your worst enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DON'T PANIC!<\/strong>&nbsp;Try to stay calm and conserve your energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DON'T SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT!<\/strong>&nbsp;This is the most common and fatal mistake. Even a professional swimmer cannot overcome the force of the current; he will only exhaust himself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SWIM PARALLEL TO THE SHORE.<\/strong>&nbsp;Rip currents are usually narrow. Try to swim parallel to the shore until you get out of the current.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ONCE OUT, SWIM BACK TO SHORE.<\/strong>&nbsp;When you have escaped the current, swim diagonally towards the shore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IF YOU CAN'T ESCAPE, FLOAT.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you feel exhausted, go with the flow. When your strength wanes, call for help by waving your arms and shouting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The coasts of the Canary Islands offer an unforgettable experience, but safety always comes first.
