Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2025: The Secrets of Africa
A Carnival of Records
The second largest carnival after Rio de Janeiro, it continues to break records year after year. In 2019, the Day Carnival attracted 400,000 people, possibly the largest public concert ever held. For 2025, even larger numbers are expected, with capacity expanded to 7,000 for the Murga Final and 6,000 for the Queen's Gala.
Spectacular Stage
The African theme promises to transform the city into an unprecedented visual spectacle. The main stage, covering more than 1,600 square metres, will be decorated with African flora, including towering baobabs, creating the perfect backdrop for dazzling performances.
History and Tradition
The carnival, with roots dating back to the 18th century, has survived through the ages, even during the Franco dictatorship, when it was celebrated under the name of "Fiestas de Invierno", demonstrating the strength and importance of this tradition.
Featured Events
Don't miss the famous "Burial of the Sardine", where a giant papier-mâché sardine is "buried", symbolising the end of carnival. To keep the carnival spirit alive all year round, visit The Carnival Housewhere costumes of past carnival queens and other historical relics are on display.
